Included in the first phase of the project was the removal of a coating on
the second and third floors and fourth floor attic. After the
coating was removed from the south side, all the stones were mapped to
determine the size and layout, the severity of the degradation, the
location of major cracking and the bedding of the stones. During
this process, samples were taken of both good and bad stone, and x-ray
defraction and scanning electron microscope testing was performed to
determine if there were geological differences. This testing was
performed to explain the weatherability of the stone. Destructive
testing was also performed on the inside to determine how the stone was
tied to the interior concrete frame. The results of this testing and
a worst case scenario restoration budget lead to the design of temporary
measures to keep the building in continuous use and a feasibility
study of the building and its systems which is occurring presently. |
